Somerset Model Airplane Club was formed in 1981 and was known as The Somerset Balsa Busters. A small
group of modelers met in a hanger at the Somerset Airport located in Somerset, Kentucky and organized the
club. It wasn't officially what you would call a club, just a bunch of would be flyer’s getting together to find
a place to fly. At the time of this first meeting nobody could fly a model. A few of us were private pilots and
were very confident that we wouldn't need any training, instruction or anything of that sort. We could fly and
it was almost beneath us to even suggest that we couldn't fly a mere model. Boy were we wrong!!!
After countless crashes and unbelievable carnage we eventually learned to fly. We were challenged for a little
while both with the learning curve of flying as well as a place to call home, that is our flying field. We flew
in several locations around the Somerset Kentucky area until fortune smiled upon us and we were blessed to
negotiate our current location located just off the new four lane By Pass of Highway 1247 toward Burnside, KY
on Cooper Power Plant Road.
We have made several additions and modifications to our new flying site to include; a paved 526' long x 40'
wide runway, 5 protected pilot stations, a large covered pavilion and observation areas, 2 helicopter pads,
restrooms, and a field house. There is plenty of room for parking for both pilots and visitors. Our new
location is truly the "Field of Dreams"!
